| Feds Approve Hawaii’s Health Insurance Exchange |
| Monday, January 07, 2013 |
The Hawaii Health Connector said Thursday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has given it conditional approval to operate the state’s online health insurance exchange.
The online health insurance exchange when it goes online on Oct. 1, 2013, will be a source for businesses and individuals in Hawaii to use tax credits and subsidies under the federal Affordable Care Act to shop for and purchase insurance. The health-care reform law goes into effect in 2014.
“This is great news for Hawaii,” Coral Andrews, the Hawaii Health Connector’s executive director, said in a statement. “The approval reflects that Hawaii is still in the forefront of health insurance exchanges nationwide and highlights the collaborative spirit that enabled us to achieve this milestone on time. While there is still much work to be done, we are confident that we will meet the necessary requirements to open our doors for business nine months from now.”
Receiving conditional approval required the Hawaii Health Connector to demonstrate significant progress in developing the state-based health insurance exchange, officials said.
“This conditional approval validates our collaboration in getting the insurance exchange up and running and our commitment to the Affordable Care Act and its promise for universal coverage and better health,” Gov. Neil Abercrombie said in a statement.
