Island Insurance Foundation names leader-in-education award finalists

Island Insurance Foundation recently recognized 12 Hawaii public school principals as nominees for an annual leadership award, the winner of which will get a total of $25,000.

Island Insurance Foundation, the charitable arm of Island Insurance, gave each nominee $1,000.

A committee comprised of Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation board members and other professionals in the education field will select one winner and two semi-finalists, to be announced on April 11. The winning principal will get a $10,000 personal award and a $15,000 award for a school project, while the semi-finalists will get a $2,000 personal award.

The annual Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award, named after the late Masayuki Tokioka, is based on criteria found by the Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy at the University of Washington, which emphasizes the importance of school leadership in fostering conducive learning communities. Tokioka was the founder of Island Insurance Co. Ltd.

This year’s 12 nominees are:

• Ryan Amine, Maunawili Elementary School;

• Elden Esmeralda, Kapolei High School;

• Chad Farias, Keaau Elementary School;

• Keith Hayashi, Waipahu High School;

• Naomi Matsuzaki, Kahaluu Elementary School;

• Corey Nakamura, Hanalei Elementary School;

• Chad Okamoto, Puu Kukui Elementary;

• Mona Smoot, Red Hill Elementary School;

• Richard Stevens, Kilohana Elementary School;

• Ann Sugibayashi, Royal Elementary School;

• Wendy Takahashi, Nanakuli Elementary School;

• Tiare Ulii, Fern Elementary School.
