Uyeda To Retire From First Insurance Co. of Hawaii In 2014
Friday, December 20, 2013
First Insurance Company of Hawaii, the largest property and casualty insurance company in the state, said Tuesday that President and CEO Allen Uyeda will retire effective next summer after nearly two decades leading the company.

FICOH COO Jeff Shonka will succeed Uyeda as president effective Jan. 1, and will be appointed to CEO, effective Aug. 1, following Uyeda’s July 31 retirement.

“We have been organizing an orderly transition over many months as part of our strategic planning process,” Uyeda said in a statement. “Jeff is an excellent leader and a very talented insurance professional who has been instrumental in FICOH’s success over the past 11 years. I am confident he will continue to provide strong leadership for FICOH’s future.”

Uyeda began his insurance career with former FICOH parent company Continental Insurance in 1986. He started working for FICOH in 1992, after Hurricane Iniki, and was appointed president and CEO in 1995.

Uyeda is chair of the Hawaii Business Roundtable, vice chair and treasurer of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation and serves on the board of First Hawaiian Bank and the Board of Governors of the Japanese American National Museum. Uyeda said he will continue to serve in these roles and others before and after his retirement.

Shonka said he looks forward to working with Uyeda during the transition period.

Shonka began working for FICOH in 2002 as its chief financial officer. He was promoted to senior vice president and chief operating officer in January.

Shonka is president of the Hawaii Insurers Council.
