Hawaii Has Biggest Variance of Car Insurance Rates |
Friday, January 31, 2014 |
Hawaii had the biggest variance of car insurance rates in the country in 2013, according to a new report from InsuranceQuotes.com.
The report from InsuranceQuotes.com, a subsidiary of Bankrate, said insurance rates in Hawaii varied almost 48 percent throughout the year. Laura Adams, senior insurance analyst for InsuranceQuotes.com, said average rates ranged from a high of $1,124 in March for a 12-month policy, to a low for $690 in December.
Adams said she isn’t sure what directly caused the wide variance, but suspects that Hawaii’s stringent regulation of the insurance industry has something to do with it.
South Dakota had the lowest variance, with a high of $728 and a low of $714. Adams noted that insurance companies compete very heavily in that state.
Adams said the takeaway is that Hawaii residents should keep a close eye on rates.
“Consumers need to be shopping,” she said. “We’re not recommending people shop every month, certainly, but at least once a year is a smart idea, even twice a year.”
