| First Insurance Charitable Foundation’s 2013 Giving Rises 8%, Surpasses $400k |

First Insurance Company of Hawaii’s charitable arm donated more than $400,000 last year to 75 Hawaii nonprofits, which was $28,000 more than the foundation’s 2012 giving totals, an increase of 8 percent.
Some of the First Insurance Charitable Foundation’s top beneficiaries in 2013 were the University of Hawaii Foundation, supporting its “55 by 25” campaign that aims to have 55 percent of adults equipped with a two- or four-year college degree by 2025, as well as the Hawaii Community Foundation, Enterprise Honolulu, Japan-America Society of Hawaii, Teach for America, American Red Cross, Aloha United Way, and Good Beginnings Alliance.
“We congratulate our many local nonprofits for continuing to strive for a better and stronger Hawaii, and (we) are happy to do our part as a local company,” First Insurance CEO Allen Uyeda said in a statement. “We look forward to helping more organizations carry out their missions in 2014.”
Grants to recipients over the years have ranged in size from a $100 check to a $10,000 boost; Of 87 grants made in 2012, several to the same organizations, the largest grant was more than $53,000 for the University of Hawaii Foundation, according to the First Insurance Charitable Foundation’s 2012 form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service, the most recent numbers available.
First Insurance Charitable Foundation has been supporting the local community since 1998, and grant awards are concentrated in areas of education and career development, economic and workforce development, family, social services and health care, as well as civic, culture and arts. The company also has a matching gift policy where any time a staff member donates to eligible nonprofits, the foundation will match that staff member’s donation.
