Hawaii Businesses, Homeowners To See Double-Digit Flood Insurance Premium Hikes
Monday, March 24, 2014
Nearly 14,000 homeowners and businesses with federally subsidized flood insurance policies in Hawaii, including more than 8,000 on Oahu alone, will see premiums rise, but legislation signed last week means policyholders will see gradual, though still steep, increases in rates over the next 10 years.

The Associated Press reports that under the law signed by President Barack Obama on Friday, owner-occupied homes will see policy rates rise 17 percent per year, while premiums for businesses and second-home owners will jump 25 percent per year.

The AP reports the rate increases will affect at least 830,000 homeowners across the nation, and will continue until the National Flood Insurance Program is collecting enough revenue to cover a $24 billion shortfall.
