About 1,000 Oahu Properties Affected By New Flood Maps
Tuesday, September 02, 2014
About 1,000 properties on Oahu, mostly along streams, were affected by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's remapping of Hawaii flood zones, and hundreds of property owners have been told that their land is now in a "high-risk" flood zone.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the changes, which are effective Nov. 5, will mean that owners with mortgages on their properties will have to buy flood insurance, or pay more if they already have policies, and that stricter development requirements could reduce the value of some properties.

The newspaper reports the last changes to Oahu's flood maps went into effect in 2011, and that work on the latest revision began in 2010.
