Hawaii Insurance Division Online Guide Lets Small Businesses Compare Health Insurance Options
Monday, September 08, 2014
Small businesses now have a definitive list to browse through when trying to decide on health insurance options to offer employees, and it’s not through the Hawaii Health Connector.

The Hawaii Insurance Division on Tuesday released a health insurance premium comparison guide on its website, which features a complete list of Affordable Care Act-compliant health plan options available for Hawaii small businesses to browse through.

The list was created to help businesses see and compare all plans available that are not listed in the Hawaii Health Connector, which only lists two out of the five companies that offer plans.

“For me, it’s exciting as an opportunity for small businesses to look at all the ACA plans,” said Gordon Ito, the state’s insurance commissioner. He said the lists are good tools for companies still using “grandmothered” plans – plans that may not be ACA-compliant but can be used until 2017 – to see what other options for coverage are available.

One list, called the small group premium comparison, includes premium pricing for individuals ages 21 to 64 years old who are nonsmokers for ACA compliant plans from health insurers such as Kaiser Permanente, Hawaii Medical Service Association, Hawaii Medical Assurance Association, UHA and Family Health Hawaii.

There are two other lists that show premium rates for individuals and small group rates. These are the premiums and plans that can be found in the connector.

Ito also said companies with 25 employees or fewer with an average salary of $50,000 or less may be eligible for a tax credit of up to 50 percent of the cost of healthcare premiums.

However, the only way for a small business to get a tax credit is to purchase the plans through the Hawaii Health Connector.

Currently the connector only offers small business plans for Kaiser Permanente and HMSA. HMSA recently announced it was pulling out of the connector next year blaming high costs as the reason, leaving Kaiser as the only insurer to offer plans through the connector.

These new lists join the Hawaii Insurance Division's other premium comparison guides for motor vehicle, homeowner, renter and condominium insurance.
