First Insurance Company of Hawaii's new VPs part of long-term succession planning
Friday, January 16, 2015
First Insurance Company of Hawaii recently announced the promotions of three new vice presidents, but it's been years in the making and part of the company's succession planning.

Stephen Tabussi, senior vice president at FICOH, said the company's senior management several years ago saw retirement looming for its leadership positions. The new vice presidents are considered the next generation of leaders for the company following a number of recent retirements.

Jeff Grimmer has been named vice president, finance operations and administration. Grimmer served as an intern at FICOH before joining full time as an actuary in 2006. He has moved up the ranks and promoted to managing actuary in 2010 and assistant vice president in 2013.

Nina Ota has been promoted to vice president, personal lines. She began as a career trainee in 1998 right out of college and worked in several different departments.

Janis Kushimi also was named vice president, human resources. She joined FICOH as an HR manager in 2013 and has more than 20 years experience in HR.

They follow several recent senior-level retirements at FICOH, including Allen Uyeda, who retired as CEO last year; Calvin Hiraoka, senior VP, corporate underwriting; and Ben Bondroff, VP claims. Karen Street, VP organizational development, will be retiring in February.

Tabussi said the more-than 100-year-old company has taken great pride in its position within the Hawaii business community.
"We felt it was important that we manage the inevitable transition as smoothly and as professionally as we could to maintain that position," he said.

The company's management succession plan covered top spots but also several layers of management and technical specialists. He said the planning helped the company train and develop replacements.

"In terms of hiring, the property and casualty insurance industry is always looking to bring in new talent," Tabussi said. Some of its recruiting efforts including funding, through its charitable foundation, a endowed professorship at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Shidler College of Business.
