Insurance Available For Hawaii Residents In Lava Zones Once Again
Thursday, June 11, 2015
A new state law has lifted a moratorium on residential property insurance, and the Hawaii Property Insurance Association is again accepting new business applications and coverage increase requests for areas where lava damage is a threat on Hawaii island.

The new law, Act 32, requires any moratorium on the issuance of residential property insurance in any state-of-emergency declared lava zones, such as the town of Pahoa, to be lifted by the HPIA, which was created by the state to insure homes in high-risk lava zones.

Hawaii Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito said that the lift on the moratorium is an opportunity for Big Island residents to safeguard their homes against unexpected property damage.

PBN previously reported that damages caused by lava could be covered under fire peril policies, depending on the damage, the policy and the insurer.

According to Ito, residents should take advantage of the opportunity to buy or increase coverage before another lava flow takes place, by contacting their insurance agencies for information. The Insurance Division of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs offers information for homeowners on its website as well.
