First Insurance Company of Hawaii and Island Insurance Among Nation’s Best Insurers
Thursday, July 16, 2015
Hawaii-based insurance companies First Insurance Company of Hawaii and Island Insurance were each ranked among the nation’s top 50 and listed on Property Casualty Ward’s 50 Companies in 2015, released by the Ward Group.

Island Insurance has reached that milestone for the eighth consecutive year, and FICOH has been on the list for seven consecutive years.

The Ward Group analyzes more than 3,000 property and casualty insurance companies for the list and ranks only the top 50. To be named on the list, companies must meet a set of criteria and achieve superior financial performance from 2010-2014 in the areas of safety, consistency and financial performance.

For safety, each company must have surplus and premiums of at least $50 million during the analysis period, profit in at least four of those years, and compound annual growth in premiums between 10 percent and 40 percent. If a company passes those benchmarks, the Ward Group measures performance including return on average equity, growth in revenue, and more.

“We are very proud to once again be recognized as one of the top performing property and casualty insurance carriers in the country,” said John Schapperle, President and Chief Executive Officer of Island Insurance, in a statement. “Achieving this distinction for eight consecutive years is a reflection of our excellent financial strength and the longstanding commitment by our outstanding employees, agency partners and loyal policyholders.”

“First Insurance is proud to be named one of the leading property and casualty insurance companies in the country,” said Jeff Shonka, President and CEO of First Insurance, in a statement. “Our team of dedicated associates and independent agency partners are the backbone of our success and allow FICOH’s 100-plus year record of service to the Hawaii market to endure.”
